Vanguard Volatility Chart

The Vanguard volatility chart highlights the movement of the Australian sharemarket over the past 30 years. As the chart shows, the Australian sharemarket has fallen greater than 10% on 8 occasions.

The chart also highlights how an investment of $10,000 in Australian shares in 1978 would have returned $554,606 in 2009. The same investment in cash would have returned $172,643.

This is why you should consider investing a significant proportion of your money in growth assets such as shares and property.
