The Vanguard volatility chart highlights the movement of the Australian sharemarket over the past 30 years. As the chart shows, the Australian sharemarket has fallen greater than 10% on 8 occasions.

The chart also highlights how an investment of $10,000 in Australian shares in 1978 would have returned $554,606 in 2009. The same investment in cash would have returned $172,643.

This is why you should consider investing a significant proportion of your money in growth assets such as shares and property.
